Common Core Math: Functions
The Functions domain, covered entirely in eighth grade, lays the groundwork for a fundamental concept in mathematics: functions are tools that mathematicians use to describe and make predictions about mathematical relationships. In eighth grade, students identify and compare functions expressed as tables, graphs or equations. In particular, students analyze linear functions—functions whose graphs are straight lines—by computing their initial values (y-intercepts) and rates of change (slopes). Students connect functions' values, graphs and equations to real-world contexts, building the foundational skill of using mathematics to describe and make predictions about the world around them.
