Common Core Math: Ratios & Proportions
In sixth and seventh grades, students extend their knowledge of fractions to include ratios and proportions. Students learn that while a fraction describes a relationship between a part and a whole, a ratio describes a relationship between parts. Students analyze and represent proportional relationships in a variety of ways: visually, verbally, numerically and algebraically. There are many opportunities to apply ratios and proportions in real-world contexts, including to convert between units of measurement and to compute unit rates. Students also work with percentages to compute interest, taxes, sale prices and tips.
